    Description

    • You should list your goals on a sheet of paper in order to make them more tangible. Writing down specifics of your goals helps to make them more realistic in your mind. Lengthy descriptions of a goal help you envision what you are striving for. Goal setters should view their goal every day in order to reinforce it in their minds. If you want to purchase a dream home, picture what features the home will have. If you want to lose weight, picture a thinner you.

    Time Frame

    • Without a time frame for accomplishing a goal, dreams may never turn into reality. You may want to use a calendar in order to track and write down the steps to your goals. This will give you a written timetable to achieve your objectives. Be realistic with timetables so that you do not become discouraged. Accomplishing smaller goals in a set time frame creates a positive reinforcement loop that boosts the confidence of the goal setter.

    Realism

    • While you can have lofty goals, becoming a billionaire on a $20,000 annual salary is not realistic. Set goals that are realistic, or you will have difficulty reaching your objectives. If you have multiple goals, make sure that these goals do not contradict each other, such as taking care of a large family while simultaneously becoming the executive of a major company.

    Motivation

    • Make sure that you really want to pursue a particular goal. Some people choose goals to conform to their peers' views or to satisfy their family. Try to figure out your underlying motivation for setting and accomplishing a goal. Will the goal make you financially successful or fulfill an emotional need that improves your self esteem?

    Steps

    • After determining a larger goal, you should break down your objectives into smaller steps so that they become more manageable. If you want to renovate a house, break down the entire house into smaller projects, such as electrical or bathroom plumbing. By completing smaller goals first, a goal setter can observe progress, which will motivate her to take further steps to complete her larger objective.
