As long as you are mentally competent, you can change, modify, update, or completely revoke your Last Will and Testament at any time. But how do you make changes to your will that will be legally valid? The key is to determine if your changes are considered small ones or big ones.

Codicils vs. New Last Wills

In order to make changes to your Last Will and Testament, you will need to do one of the following:

  1. For small changes, such as updating the name of a beneficiary who has gotten married or divorced or changing who will be your Personal Representative, sign a Codicil that is valid under applicable state law.
  2. For big changes or a series of small changes, such as changing who gets what or changing a specific bequest and the Personal Representative, revoke your current will as required under applicable state law and then sign a completely new will that is valid under applicable state law.
