Information on Dog-Breed Behaviors
- The sporting group contains such dogs as the Cocker Spaniel, Labrador Retriever and Weimaraner. Dogs in this group are very active and are excellent hunters. They are friendly and enjoy regular exercise.
- Common hound dogs include Beagles, Dachshunds and Basset Hounds. They are known hunters with an incredible sense of smell. Hounds have enduring stamina and are dedicated to their task.
- Doberman Pinschers, Boxers and Great Danes are classified under the working group. These dogs are intelligent and strong. Working dogs require constant stimulation and need training to make them suitable pets.
- Terriers are a popular choice as pets and include Schnauzers, Cairn Terriers and Jack Russells. They are highly energetic and often confrontational with other dogs.
- The toy group contains the smallest breeds of dogs such as the Chihuahua, Pomeranian and Pug. They are bred mostly for companionship and make excellent lapdogs. Toys are good guard dogs and don't back away from a confrontation.
