Motorcycle Insurance Qualifications

    Classic vs. Conventional

    • A portion of the motorcycle market, like the car market, is composed of classic vehicle collection. Insurance for classic motorcycles collected specifically as such has different qualifications from typical insurance. For a classic motorcycle that counts as part of a collection, the motorcycle must be at least 15 years old, restored or in original condition, and protected by security systems and a locked garage. Conventional motorcycle insurance does not require these steps, but insurers tend to associate it with a higher level of danger and have other requirements.

    Age and Instruction

    • As in automobiles, age and level of instruction can be vital parts of the qualification process. The younger the rider, the more expensive and difficult insurance will be to get. Because of the increased danger of motorcycles, insurers often deny coverage if claims have already been recently made on another policy or if the rider has had tickets or accidents in the recent past. Levels of motorcycle training and instruction, on the other hand, can lower premiums and make qualification easier.

    Power and Location

    • Power and location are also key parts of the qualification process. In general, the more powerful the motorcycle, the more difficult it will be to qualify for a policy, but power also increases the danger of riding. Location refers primarily to where the motorcycle is kept and stored. Insurers are not anxious to insure motorcycles for theft and property damage if they are used in neighborhoods with high crime rates.

    Mileage

    • Mileage typically shows what the motorcycle is used for. Some people only use them for leisure, driving the bikes primarily on weekends or only after work. Others use their motorcycles for most of their transportation. The more the motorcycle is used, the higher the premiums will be. Mileage is a useful way to track this usage, although insurers will also want to know the ways the bike is used when considering a detailed application.
