What Are the Causes of Breast Pain in a Man?
- One common cause of breast pain in men is called gynecomastia, which is a harmless swelling in the breast. Puberty, hormone therapy and some medications can cause the condition, which usually resolves on its own.
- Another condition is called runner's nipple which appears as a red, cracked or sore nipple. Runner's nipple is irritation caused by the clothes rubbing against the skin. Wearing loose clothes, applying Vaseline or putting bandages over nipples can help.
- If you notice a lump, that may or may not be painful, see your doctor. It is mostly likely a benign cyst.
- Breast cancer, however rare, can occur in men. Symptoms include a painless lump under the nipple, skin changes and discharge from the nipple.
- A painless lump does not always signify cancer. Fibroadenomas are benign tumors that can occur in men, as well as women.
