Medication That Can Control and Stop Anxiety and Panic Attacks
If you have ever experienced an anxiety or panic attack then you know how awful an episode can be.
Seemingly in an instant you have an almost dizzying feeling that you are having a heart attack, perhaps dying, certainly not in control of what is happening to you.
Rest assured that you are not alone.
I suffered from severe anxiety and panic attacks that forced me to miss and ultimately avoid work, social events, trips, church, shopping malls, anywhere that I feared an event might be triggered bringing on an attack.
The severity of attacks that I had were so intense that a doctor suggested I try prescriptive medications to stop or at least curtail the severity of the attacks.
While this is my LEAST favorite option and I would avoid it if at all possible, you should know that the option does exist to get medication if your doctor decides that prescribing it for you is in your best interest.
Medications prescribed by MDs include Xanax, Prozac, Zoloft and Lorazepam.
These meds are used to treat different problems.
Some are used for depression and anxiety disorder and some for associated problems.
Let's take a brief look at each: Xanax- the trade name for Alprazolam is a powerful drug prescribed generally for the treatment of anxiety attacks and panic attacks.
Physical dependence on Xanax is possible.
so if you use this med under a physician's care and stop you may suffer from withdrawal symptoms.
Some of the most common are lack of sleep, stomach cramps, muscle aches, perspiration, vomiting, depression and even anxiety! Prozac- a trade name for Fluoxetine is prescribed for treatment as an antidepressant in cases of severe depression.
Depression is often a prelude or contributing factor to an anxiety triggering event so the drug may have some benefit to sufferers.
However you must keep in mind that while Prozac is effective in the short term there are side effects that may occur including but not limited to insomnia, nausea, loss of libido and anorexia.
Zoloft is the trade name for Sertraline Hydrochloride and is used to treat depression and anxiety.
It has been shown to be effective for men and women, especially in cases of less than severe panic.
Once again the side effects are not pleasant, including but not limited to: nausea, diarrhea, insomnia, dizziness and sexual side effects Lorazepam a short acting and very powerful drug that is prescribed for the short term treatment of anxiety.
Lorazepam has a serious possibility of being misused as a recreational drug due to it's potency.
It is so powerful that it is on occasion reported to have been used as a sedative hypnotic for criminal purposes.
If used long term the user may become dependent on the drug and suffer from withdrawal symptoms including insomnia and anxiety.
You should always ask your medical doctor for help with understanding how these meds work and if any of them are appropriate in your case to help you control your panic and anxiety attacks.
Avoid Illegal Drugs at all costs Illegal drugs have the potential for serious side effects and could land you in jail.
If you are not convinced, then just imagine having a panic attack while imprisoned in an 8X8 cell.
Enough said.
Whatever course of action you and your doctor decide to pursue to stop your anxiety and panic attacks I wish you the best of good luck and good health
