Scripture Puppets Craft
- Any human character from Scripture can be made into a felt hand puppet. Cut two pieces of felt into the shape of a person with two arms, a head and an open bottom for inserting your hand. Join the felt pieces with fabric glue or stitch together with thread. Make the puppet specific to a particular Scripture passage by decorating it accordingly, such as a colorful coat for Joseph and his coat of many colors, a crown for King Herod or a slingshot and stones for David.
- Make finger puppets out of felt by sewing or gluing together two upside down U-shaped pieces of felt. Use felt finger puppets alone, such as creating the Holy Family with the finger puppets Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus, or pair finger puppets with a felt hand puppet, such as creating a Good Shepherd hand puppet and sheep finger puppets.
- Paper bag puppets are an economical way to create a large number of Scripture puppets. Use the folded portion of the paper bag as the puppet’s head. Provide scraps of material, construction paper, pipe cleaners and markers for decorating the puppets. After drawing on a face, children can glue scraps of material on as clothing, fold a pipe cleaner into a shepherd’s staff or add construction paper accessories. Ideas include making Moses with a construction paper 10 Commandments tablet or an angel with construction paper wings.
- For puppets that are especially easy for younger children, make stick puppets. Download and print color pages featuring Scripture characters. Allow children to color the characters, then cut them out and glue or tape a wooden craft stick to the back. Their affordability and ease of construction also make these puppets ideal for creating a large cast, such as all the apostles and Jesus to retell the story of the Last Supper.
