  A "schlosshotel" is a term that refers to a castle that has been turned into a hotel. Historically, the castles of the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein are more residences than fortifications, since the state was a Danish province until the middle of the 19th century. Some are still used by the nobility. Others have been turned into castle hotels, making the luxurious accommodations of the nobility available to the public.
  
  

Gut Waterneverstorff

• The Gut Waterneverstorff castle is a prime example of the Regency style in Germany, and there are three apartments for hotel guests in the castle proper. The historic cottages on the grounds have been turned into hotel rooms. The castle also has a camping site and its own marina.

Schloss Weissenhaus

• The Weissenhaus castle is currently being remodeled into a hotel with several restaurants, and is expected to open in 2012. After remodeling, the castle, along with the surrounding cottages, will function as a hotel with 130 beds in the old castle. The attached spa will have a forest pool.

Schloß Tremsbüttel

• Tremsbüttel Castle was turned into a hotel in 1949, and housed guests such as The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, and Sophia Loren in the 1970's. The castle was renovated in 1996 and now has 50 hotel rooms, all different and furnished with silk, brocade, and antiques.
