Youth Unemployment, How To Take Action

Unemployment, and youth unemployment in particular, has become an English, European and worldwide problem, which is deepening.
There are an increasing number of jobseekers looking for work in all domains, and in almost all countries.
Sadly, many of these are highly qualified post students and collegians.
Youth unemployment figures recently released for the United Kingdom showed over 1 million unemployed young people between the ages of 16 and 24.
Some of these will inevitably be ex-students who have left college or university with a degree, or some other qualification, but still find it next to impossible to get a job.
Factory output has risen slightly as measured in October and over the figures for September 2011.
In the real world this probably has had no significance on the unemployment so widespread in the U.
K.
, Europe and much of the world.
There is a very general lack of confidence in the global world economy.
There is little incentive for companies, large or small, to invest in additional workers.
  1. Any lucky employer with an expanding order book, looking to increase output significantly will still think twice before taking on additional staff.
The laws and regulations covering full-time employees can lead to the employer being, or having the feeling of being, at a disadvantage should they subsequently be wanting to dismiss staff, either because the order book demands fall again, or because of dissatisfaction with an individual employee.
  2. It is most likely that a prospective employer when selecting candidates for any particular post will have to take into account the effective loss in time, and therefore loss in financial terms, involved in training the newcomer into the inevitable peculiarities of that particular factory or company.
  3. This time for such adjustments is greatly more risky for the employer should he or she contemplate taking on a "youngster" from the those on the unemployment register, who fall into the category of having a good qualification but no work experience whatsoever.
  4. If the job applicant has been a student at any level, he or she will have no known, and certainly no proven, work ethic record.
  5. However false it may be the much generalised impression of student life is not that of somebody who is used to getting up at a regular time in the mornings; and certainly not known to be working to a regular daily timetable.
After all most factories, offices or studios tend to work on the basis of around 40 hours per week, at set times for each of those days.
  6. So an ex-collegian looking to start work is already at a disadvantage
  7. Recent television and radio interviews with ex-students with degree level qualifications, indicate that many such young people don't even get the courtesy of a reply from their multiple job applications, far less to be invited for an interview! Although it must be acknowledged that the media might be tempted to search out for these more extreme cases.
Where this applies it must be extraordinarily de-moralising.
Should that young jobseeker get as far as being offered an interview, further obstacles appear.
It must be given that any employer, or any interviewer acting for an employer, will almost certainly have a great choice of selection by the sheer numbers of likely applications for any single job.
There is little or no incentive for him or her to pick a young person, without any job experience what-so-ever, over somebody older, who has previously worked in the same, or similar job situation.
Any humanitarian feelings the interviewer allows, even sub-consciously, to influence them will also point to the more mature candidate.
It can easily be imagined that they will tend towards somebody nearer their own age, and who probably has the stabilising factors of, and responsibility to support, a family and mortgage.
So despite young people having completed studies beyond the mandatory age it is very apparent that this did does not give them any clear advantage, even if they have a degree, over the general population now seeking employment.
It is very likely that they will be disadvantaged by not having taken a job opportunity much earlier, when things were generally easier.
· The most constant blocking element is that of no work experience at all.
This is rather a vicious circle in that without being given the job it is difficult to see how they can gain job experience.
· There is however one sure for fire way of overcoming this! Take steps to overcome this deficit YOURSELF! The only positive and direct way to do this is to start working yourself! With yourself and for yourself! Start some form of business.
Historically, the general idea of starting a business tended to be within a trade, whether that be something like plumbing, electrical work.
In modern times this could extend into installation work in respect of renewable energies supplies.
These all going to involve investment in tools and equipment together with almost probably a vehicle to get around in, which involves further investment in purchase, road tax and insurance quite a hefty sum! A trade business may well not be suited to your abilities if your studies had been outside these zones.
If the jobseeker's studies were geared towards the professions, then to set up a new business probably involves the establishment or some sort of office and considerable publicity costs to attract customers.
Apart from the expense, this could be quite a lengthy process with money going out rather than coming in.
There are probably far more opportunities within professional careers of obtaining sell-employed, part-time work with a company subject to seasonal fluctuations.
These can included staffing gaps bought on by such as holidays, and possibly health issues and absences.
It might be worth considering trying to arrange an appointment, or even cold calling, to see if the company would accept keeping a note of your name and contact details for any future occasional use.
Any move along the above lines in setting up and running your own business does not preclude you from continuing to search the more traditional lines and the fact that you have made a positive move towards creating your own solution to the unemployment problem can only be for the best.
It doesn't really matter very much if after a period the business fails! The very fact that you have made an effort to solve your problem by your own efforts, will be viewed in any future application as somebody with more "get up and go" then your rival applicants.
The third alternative, and probably the one requiring the least capital investment, is that of starting a business, from home, and online.
Nowadays it is difficult to imagine anybody who has gone through further education not being in possession of, or having access to a computer and an Internet connection.
That is all that is necessary other than your own willingness to get down to it! There are many forms of working online from your home and these may well include such things as straightforward copy typing, translation work if your studies have included a second language and data filling opportunities.
Though the latter may require considerable depth of knowledge depending on the type of data being entered,e.
g.
clinical data.
Any search online will show an enormous amount of such work available.
It is a matter of selecting the one most suitable to your own qualifications and needs.
In almost all of them though, you will effectively be paid an hourly rate from an employer.
The hourly rate will depend on your speed and accuracy on the keyboard, and the overall income will be almost directly related to the number of hours you work.
These types of work could more generally be considered as part-time, or a means of supplementing present income.
Not best suited to any student who continued schooling with the hope and expectation of earning a better than average income.
A more complete solution could be achieved by starting a home based, online business.
Again there are many alternatives but probably one of the widest ranges is within Internet marketing.
This can itself be taken along several different roads, such as direct selling, or affiliate marketing.
The aim in either would be to gain money from promoting goods and services provided by others, so that you are not responsible for the manufacture, stocking and delivery of any goods.
Neither is there a need to setup procedures for customer support, or dealing with complaints.
A big, but interesting and fertile subject! With any of these home-based business ideas, mainly using a computer you will inevitably pick up new, or hone existing skills and knowledge.
AGAIN:You do not need to stop searching for work elsewhere, as you are now doing.
The very great difference being that should you gain an interview, you will show yourself as somebody who is serious in intention, and willing to work to repair your present situation, NOT just sit back and wait for somebody else to act for you! This must put you head and shoulders above almost all other interviewees!
