    • 1). Log onto the National Archives Veterans' Service Records website. The National Archives process all requests for a veteran's military records.

    • 2). Download and complete Standard Form 180 "Request Pertaining to Military Records" from the National Archives website. You will need to know several pieces of information about the veteran, including social security number, military branch and dates of service.

    • 3). Mail or fax the completed SF-180 to the National Archives' National Personnel Records Center for processing. The National Archives offers this service for free, though expect the process to take several weeks as there is usually a backlog of requests.
