Build Your Battlefield

• The shape of the battlefield is crucial to any game strategy. Build in several height variations for ranged units, which get an attack bonus for elevation. Include trees, ruins and other obstacles to provide cover for your close combat units. Use water to slow your opponent's movements, as most units must stop before they enter any body of water. Other tactically-strong terrains are lava, swamp and snow tiles.
  
  

Build Your Army

• The army figures come with a hero or squad card. The squads are your grunts. They come in a group of three or four and work best when they are kept together. A hero is a single powerful figure who can provide an effective punch to your ranks. The actual size of your army is set by the game scenario. The game may say your army has 400 points. Each hero or squad member card has a number on it, and you can only fit in as many members that don't pass 400 points. The more figures you can gather under the limits, the better your army will be.
  
  

Special Abilities

• Movement abilities such as flight, water suits or glacier traverse can negate terrain features. Attack powers, like double attack, righteous smite or galloping charge, are good ways to break through an opponent's line. A special ranged attack like the Roman Archers' arrow volley can let relatively low-powered figures team up and take on tougher heroes. Sharpshooter gives a character about a 10 percent chance to kill any figure from a distance with one shot.
  
  

Strategy

• High-powered brawler type characters with a good movement rate can be devastating to an opponent. Units with a long range provide cover while your ground units move in, or you can hold your ground units back to act as shields to your shooters. Take advantage of bonuses such as the extra attack die for shooting from high ground. Also, use the glyphs, some of which can provide bonuses at key turning points in a game. For instance, the Glyph of Astrid, which gives a plus one attack, on top of a hill will provide two extra attack dice.
