Ford Model T

• In 1916, more than half of all the cars in the world were Ford Model T's. After the end of the First World War, Ford resumed its full-scale production of the model. The new Ts featured an electric "self starter," but they still came in one color--basic black.
  
  

River Rouge Complex

• Ford's River Rouge Complex, situated in Detroit, was completed in 1928. For the better part of the last century, the Rouge complex was the only place where it was possible to see an automobile completely produced, from start to finish, in a single day.
  
  

Car Production Speed

• At its height, a new car was manufactured in the Rouge complex every 49 seconds. Workers smelted 6,000 tons of iron every day and more than 500 tons of glass was also made each day.
  
  

Ford Mustang Launch

• Ford launched the Mustang on April 17, 1964. The price tag on this vehicle was $2,368, and an overwhelming number of people were interested in buying it. In Garland, Texas, 15 customers placed a bid on one Mustang when it was first produced, and the winner wanted to spend the night in the vehicle to ensure that it would not be sold to someone else before his check cleared the following day.
  
  

Mustang Racecars & Toys

• Just a month after it began production, the Mustang hit the race track as the pace car for the Indianapolis 500 race. The same year, over 90,000 pedal-powered Mustangs for children were sold during the Christmas season.
  
  

Parking High

• The 1966 Mustang has the distinction of being the first car to park on the observation deck of New York's Empire State Building. This was accomplished by disassembling a convertible and taking it up to the 86th floor deck through passenger elevators.
  
  

Milestones

• A Mustang GT convertible 40th anniversary edition, produced in 2004, was Ford's 300 millionth car. In 2008, Ford produced its 9 millionth Mustang.
