Some say the origins of Pearly Kings lie with costermongers, tough market traders who decorated their clothes with buttons. Others identify the original Pearly as Harry Croft, a road sweeper who in 1875 covered his clothing in discarded buttons to raise funds for hospitals and orphanages. By 1900 there were several Pearly families in inner London districts.
