Daily Inspiration | The Pitch Drop Experiment

What the heck is a pitch drop experiment? Like those horrible singers on American Idol? No, I'm talking about a SUBSTANCE. Like water. But awesomer. Pitch is a derivative of tar once used for waterproofing boats. At room temperature pitch feels solid, even brittle, and can easily be shattered with a blow from a hammer. But it's actually quite fluid! Now, I've never heard of this before. My husband showed this to me this morning and I was mesmerized by it.

The Pitch Drop Experiment Background

In 1927 Professor Parnell heated a sample of pitch and poured it into a glass funnel with a sealed stem. Three years were allowed for the pitch to settle, and in 1930 the sealed stem was cut. From that date on the pitch has slowly dripped out of the funnel - so slowly that now, 83 years later, the ninth drop is only just forming. The experiment was set up as a demonstration and is not kept under special environmental conditions (it is actually kept in a display cabinet in the foyer of the Department), so the rate of flow of the pitch varies with seasonal changes in temperature. Nonetheless, it is possible to make an estimate of the viscosity of this sample of pitch (R. Edgeworth, B.J. Dalton and T. Parnell, Eur. J. Phys (1984) 198-200). It turns out to be about 100 billion times more viscous than water! In the 83 years that the pitch has been dripping no-one has ever seen the drop fall.

That got me to thinking. The Pitch Drop Experiment is like the human life & mind. Changes are happening, yet sometimes it happens so slowly that we end up missing them. Like the work you put in at the gym. Many people give up after a few weeks because they don't look like Julianne Michaels or Arnold Schwarzenegger in his hay day. So often, we don't get our instant gratification so we quit. Haven't you heard the term "Rome wasn't built in a day."? You didn't get how you are today, in a day. It took decades, right? Why would you expect to change your entire way of thinking or your body in a day? YOU CAN'T GIVE UP!

At some point, the pitch will drop. Someone may or may not be there to see it but it still happens. The same thing happens in our lives. If we're feeding our brains and bodies healthy stuff, things that are good for us, then we will improve. It's inevitable. You can't put a time frame on it but it's happening! Just keep moving forward and keep pumping your brain and your body full of the good stuff and the results will happen. If you aren't sure, watch my YouTube videos. you can see the change in me. My weight, my attitude, my hair (lol) have all changed over the last month. It's crazy! Things are always changing. How much is up to you!
