    • 1). Test for allergies before you use latex. Find a small area of skin, such as the back of your hand or the inside of your wrist, apply a small amount of the liquid latex and wait about an hour. Signs of allergic reaction include, but aren't limited to: itching, wheezing, eye irritation, itching or a skin rash. If you have an allergic reaction, contact your doctor or call 911 immediately. Continue usage if nothing happens. Keep in mind that allergic reactions may be delayed; therefore, keep an eye on the treated area.

    • 2). Protect your investments. Latex is an adhesive. Wash any utensils you'll use when working with latex in water and soap, then dip them in liquid soap. Wipe off excess soap. For example, dipping a brush in soap keeps the latex from sticking to the brush, allowing you to work with it much more easily.

    • 3). Pour out the amount of latex you plan on using in small increments to extend the life of your latex. Left open, the ingredients in latex quickly dry out.

    • 4). Use porous materials for molds in which you pour latex. Use nonporous materials such as ceramic for molds you'll apply latex to. Apply in thin layers. Latex dries by air; therefore, if it's too thick, the lowest layers may not dry completely.

    • 5). Wear gloves and other protective equipment when working with latex.
