Kindergarten Farm Activities
- In this activity, ask the kids to distinguish between animals that they could find on the farm and animals that they can find in the zoo. You can also ask the children to group animals according to these criteria, or any other similarities such as carnivorous or herbivorous, mammals or birds, and big or small. The activity will help children gain familiarity with the animals before they see them and gain information on animals that they will not see at the farm.
- Visiting the farm is a great way to lead the children into their first biology lessons. You can use examples such as cows and horses or the plants that they eat to discuss the animal's biology and ecology.
- You can spike the children's interest in math activities after a farm visit by having them count animals like cows and chickens instead of normal integers. Pictures of farm animals on quizzes and homework assignments will help keep the children's attention on their work after having seen the animals firsthand.
- There are hundreds of kindergarten-appropriate, farm-themed songs on the Internet that you can have your class sing as a music lesson.
- You can have your class make cows, sheep and chickens out of cut-out papers. You can also turn it into an educational activity by having your kids make eggs, milk and wool and put the products of the animals with the animals that they come from.
