The Unforeseen Stress and Challenges of Nursing

Anyone in the medical profession knows that there is a lot of stress involved, especially at hospitals, and emergency rooms.
But even regular medical care facilities can take their toll, it's always something, and it is hard not to internalize or stay out of the emotional flowing baggage of patients.
This is why nurses and all medical professionals from the top of the food chain to the bottom need to find a way to clear their heads, take a vacation and de-stress.
Unfortunately, sometimes that's not possible and they turn towards the bottle, or drugs for altered state of minds.
And when it comes to drugs all too often they turn towards prescriptions medicines, which are all around them, all day long.
Despite what you might think this is a really serious problem in modern medicine today.
Ask any nurse about stories of doctors or fellow nurses with issues of this sort.
Recently, there was a very interesting article in the Los Angeles Times about how doctors, and nurses often had become addicted to prescription drugs.
The article appeared in the December 24, 2010 edition and was titled; "Healthcare Professionals Face Addiction Challenges - Easy Access and Knowledge of Drug Use" by Joel Hood (reporting from Chicago).
There was an interesting line in this piece, one of those interviewed stated; "The biggest problems doctors and nurses have is they think they can handle it.
You become delusional about what you think you can control.
" And in examining this I ask, why do you think this is? It would seem to me that it has something to do with all the knowledge of how the mind, central nervous system, and body works, thus in many regards gives them the edge in using drugs for specific mind altering needs.
But that too just makes the addiction worse, the denial of drugs and addiction is said to be quite common and an integral component of the problem.
That chain of denial is hard to break, along with the inherent stress that goes with that line of work - it's everywhere, and inescapable, it's a lethal combination.
Perhaps, more help is needed, or more training of these challenges for those who enter the profession.
Indeed, I hope you might think on this today.
Perhaps we should discuss this topic, as it is a growing problem in the medical and health industry.
