"What a day, man, I just couldn't believe it," an ecstatic Dixon said.
Well I'm sure that there were many thousands of Kiwi's who knew this day was going to happen sooner rather than later as Scott has proven to be one of the most talented drivers in the field since arriving in America.
The 27 year old Kiwi driver collects a cool $US2.
5 million for winning the race but the fact that he will be recorded in history as a winner of the greatest motor race in the world will be more important for him an his career.
It is also good for motor sport in New Zealand where a higher percentage of drivers per head of population succeed in many different forms of racing throughout the world than any other country.
With only 4 million people in New Zealand there are now Kiwi winners listed in all the biggest motor sports events, including the Le Mans 24 hour race, the Formula 1 World Championship, the Can Am Series of Yesteryear, Bathurst V8 Supercars and now Indianapolis 500.
It wasn't such a good day for many others with Dana Patrick's chances dashed when Australian driver Ryan Briscoe hit her car while exiting from the pit road and many others having fallen by the wayside earlier in the race.
These types of incidences are to be expected at Indy and Scott made the most of his opportunities while staying out of trouble throughout the event.
