How to Locate People Using SS Numbers

    • 1). Gather up all the information you have on the individual, including the SSN, any names you've known them to use, an old address or two, phone numbers and spouse names. The more information you know at the outset, the easier it is to confirm you are looking at the correct records.

    • 2). Get on the Internet and search for "public records search." There are lots of online public records companies out there, and some are better than others. Some of the larger companies (which have the most detailed databases) are U.S. Search and Intelius. Look at different websites to check out the packages and prices they offer, and choose the website that fits your needs and wallet.

    • 3). Do a search by SSN. You'll need both the number and the person's last name and they'll need to match up in the database. You can do a simple search for addresses attached to the SSN, or you can go for a complete background search, which will dig up every record attached to the SSN in the company's database.

    • 4). Pay the fee, which will be between $20 and $50, depending upon which company and package you select. The records should be available within minutes.
