Grooming your dog is one of the basic responsibilities of pet owners. Just like people, dogs should be groomed regularly to avoid infection and other diseases that can be brought about by fleas on dogs. It is very important then as pet owners that you know the different steps in grooming your dogs to keep them healthy and good looking.

Hair Care

The hair care of your pets solely depends on their hair type. Dogs with long hair require daily brushing to get rid of matting and tangling hair problems. For medium haired dogs, brushing at least once a week is suggested; for dogs with short hair, it can be done once a month.

It is very necessary that you use a quality hair brush in combing your dog's long hair to loosen tangles to prevent the growth of bacteria in their skin that can lead to yeast infection. Moreover, fleas on dogs may hide on tangled hair; making your pet vulnerable to parasites.

Eye Care

Damp a piece of cloth with warm water and cautiously wipe away the discharge or dirt in the corners of their eyes. Dogs with light shade and long hair may require special destaining products that can eliminate the tear stains in their coats.

Ear Care

Apply ear cleaning solution on cotton swabs and gently wipe the internal portion of your dog's ear to get rid of the dirt and wax. Apply few drops of alcohol to their ears to eliminate bacteria or ear mites; then wipe with cotton swabs to dry them. Always remember that a healthy ear is clean, odorless and only has minimal wax.

Dental Care

To avoid tartar buildup, clean your dog's teeth at least two times in a week. Use a toothbrush or a piece of cloth wrapped on your fingertip when cleaning your dog's teeth. There are also antibacterial mouth sprays that are specifically designed for your dog's dental care.

Nail Trimming

Long nails can result to walking difficulties that can cause skeletal problems. Trim their nails at least once a week. If you happened to cut them very short and caused bleeding, put some cornstarch on the affected area to stop the bleeding.

Bathing Procedure

For most dogs, bath time is never a fun time. Dogs can take a bath in a tub or better yet in running water to avoid bathing him with unclean water. There are now bathing equipments that are ergonomically designed to make dog bathing less annoying.

Wet your dog thoroughly and start washing his neck down to his body. Use dog shampoo that is recommended by your vet to avoid fleas on dogs. If possible, dilute the shampoo with water before applying to your dog's fur to prevent retaining soap residues on your dog's coat and at the same time killing fleas on dogs.

Rinse your dog thoroughly with running water; then pat with thick towel to dry his fur. For long haired dog, a brush and a blow dryer can be used to prevent tangled hair.
