1. Around Madrid Road Trip


The sights around the capital are all excellent day trips from Madrid, but often require returning to Madrid every evening if you're going by public transport. Not if you have a car.

  • Day 2: Consuegra
  • Day 3: El Escorial
  • Day 3: Valle de los Caidos
  • Day 4: Segovia
  • Day 5: From here, either head to Salamanca or to the wine-growing region of Ribera del Duero

2. North-West from Madrid

Head straight up to the Ribera del Duero wine region and then on to Burgos with its magnificent cathedral and city walls. Then head west to Leon with its abundance of free tapas, towards the north coast for cider-loving Oviedo and then to Santiago via the Rias Altas. Then either head to Santiago or explore the Rias Baixas. After that, consider driving down to Porto in Portugal.

3. Wine Country Road Trip

4. South from Madrid

Head due south towards Granada, via Toledo, Don Quijote's windmills in Consuegra, and the olive groves of Jaen. After you've gorged yourself on free tapas in Granada and paid a visit to the Alhambra, explore the Alpujarras mountain range before relaxing on the beach!

7. Madrid to Valencia

Head from Madrid to Valencia via some of Madrid's lesser known satellite towns. Visit Cuenca with its startling houses that hang off the edge of a cliff, before visiting the wine town of Requena.
