Training Your Schipperke - A Very Unusual Breed of Dogs

103 20
The Schipperke is a somewhat rare breed and is actually a Scandinavian Boat dog and a Ratter.
With the right discipline, this dog is easy to train and makes a wonderful companion for an apartment dweller because of the small size.
The Schipperke is between 15 and 20 lbs, has a wonderful shiny soft black coat and if it is a pure bred dog, the tail has been trimmed.
If it has a tail, it curls up over the body and is in continuous motion.
He looks like a miniature German Shepard.
He is a very affectionate dog and easily follows direction.
Since he is a small dog, it is advisable to get him a holster instead of a collar to avoid choking him, which can lead to a continuous cough.
When you start training your Schipperke, have some tiny rewards ready when he follows your command, but do not give him any unless he does exactly what you want him to do.
Guide him with gentle pressure.
Make sure you take him for at least 1/2 hour walk and 2 shorter ones every day, since he is very energetic and if he does not get the exercise, he will run around the house like a maniac and drive you crazy.
While on the walk, teach him to heel by holding the leash close to you and making him stay by your foot and your walk will become an activity that both of you will look forward to.
When you walk out the door, make him stay inside the Threshold by making him sit and than add "Stay" while you slowly walk out the door backwards.
Come back to him slowly and praise him, while still repeating "Stay" and give him a treat.
He learns very quickly, but only if you are consistent with your commands.
He can and will walk on his hind-legs for extended periods of time if he sees something that interests him.
He is also a very good jumper and will jump in your lap with just the slightest encouragement.
Since he is very protective of his master, he may bark at other dogs.
If he does, just hold his collar and tell him "no" while the other dog walks by.
He will learn quickly to be tolerant of other dogs close by, while still protecting you.
He is a very loyal dog and will bring you a lot of joy, if trained well.
