Lot's of people are really intimidated by going to the gym and lifting weights.
This seems especially true for women.
I am not sure why this is, but it happens a lot (and even men can feel intimidated).
There are several ways to overcome this, and several reasons why you should.

  • Muscle mass keeps you thin and burns calories
  • Resistance training helps prevent osteoperosis and osteoarthritis

How to get over being afraid of the equipment.
The best way that I know of to get over being afraid of weight lifting equipment is to either read a good book or to hire a personal trainer.
Many gyms have personal trainers available for a few sessions to help you get started and the cost is usually reasonable.
Once you know what you are doing it is easy to become more confident.
How to get over being afraid of the people.
A lot of times going to the gym is very intimidating, especially if you are out of shape (I know it was for me).
There are a couple of options that work well here.
First, you can find a gym that has a greater variety of people working out.
YMCA's are usually good for this.
At a Y, you will usually find people of all fitness levels and body types.
Another option is to work out at home.
You actually don't need a huge amount of equipment to work out at home, but it is good to have a weight bench and dumbbells.
If you are interested in lifting weights at all there is no time like the present to get started.
