All states have hunting regulations for the safety of people and the animals. The regulations differ depending on the state, the animal and the age/experience of the hunter. There are specific hunting seasons for various animals, licenses to obtain, and regulations to adhere to. In Virginia, hunting is a major past time and has several regulations pertaining to deer hunting.

    Hunting Gear

    • As safety is one of the foremost concerns during hunting, there is a strict law regarding hunting wear. Every hunter, or person accompanying a hunter, must wear blaze orange upper-body clothing or hat that is visible from 360 degrees during the firearms deer season and youth deer day. This is designed to minimize the risk of a hunting accident. There are some exemptions to the blaze orange clothing rule. For instance, hunters that are in areas where firearms are prohibited are not required to wear blaze orange.

    Limitations on Deer Hunting

    • It is against the law to attract deer by placing or distributing food, salt or minerals during the deer hunting season. In addition, there are limits to the amount of deer that a hunter can kill and bag during the season. East of the Blue Ridge (except on National Forest lands in Amherst, Bedford, and Nelson counties), the limit is two per day, and six for the license year. Of the six deer, no more than three may be antlered. West of the Blue Ridge and on National Forest lands in Amherst, Bedford, and Nelson counties, there is a limit of one deer a day, and five deer for the license year. Of the five deer, only two deer may be antlered.

    Licenses

    • All hunters must obtain licenses before hunting in Virginia. There are licenses for resident and non-resident hunters, for youth hunters, and for disabled persons or senior citizens. Depending on the type of game you wish to hunt, the licenses are different and cost varying amounts. Usually, you need to purchase multiple licenses. For instance, a 16-year old non-resident that wishes to hunt deer would need a hunting license, a deer license, and a Virgina State Forest Use Permit.
