    • 1). Make a clean break. While it's tempting to continue some form of contact with the guy you're stuck on, it's easier to put him out of your mind if you cut all ties. Staying in touch keeps you going in emotional circles, and only prolongs your ability to move on. Don't call, and don't take his calls. This goes for text messages, too, and block his email address from your inbox. If you use social networking websites to keep up with friends, purge him from your list of contacts so you won't be able to check up on him. If you work together, interact only if you must, and only as far as it pertains to work.

    • 2). Allow yourself some time to wallow. Pretending you aren't feeling what you're feeling might allow you to get through the day without breaking down, but sooner or later the emotions you've been stuffing inside will well up. Be gentle with yourself for a short time and give into the sadness. Take an evening -- or even a whole weekend -- to let it all out. Stay in bed, watch sappy movies and cry if you need to. Put a time limit on these activities, then straighten up and get on with getting over him.

    • 3). Hide the evidence. Remove all physical reminders of the heartbreaker from your surroundings. Get rid of that T-shirt of his you used to love sleeping in. Pack up photos, gifts, cards, letters and other mementos so they don't trigger your emotions each time you see them. It's OK to stash your "love stuff" in the back of a closet if you think you'll enjoy a nostalgic trip down memory lane someday, but it's also perfectly acceptable to toss it for good. It might even be therapeutic to tear up that T-shirt and use it to clean the bathroom, burn his cards and letters or donate stuffed animals he offered as gifts to a child in need.

    • 4). Work on yourself. Some breakup survival tips are invaluable in getting you through the immediate pain, but focusing on your needs and desires benefits you in the long run as well. Make a list of activities you've always wanted to do, like taking up a new hobby, hitting the gym or furthering your education, and start doing them. There is empowerment in living your life for yourself. You'll find you're no longer dwelling on what any man thinks of you, and you'll be a more complete person in the end.

    • 5). Lean on friends. When your emotions are taking over, a friend can help you survive a breakup by offering a sympathetic ear, a comforting hug or even some much needed distraction. Still, let your friends know that while you need kindness and support, they'll help you the most by being firm with you if you slip back into obsessively missing your old flame.
