Irritant-Induced Asthma

Cause

Extensive lists of agents associated with RADS have been published. The seven most frequently reported agents for work-related RADS were, in decreasing order: cleaning materials; chemicals not otherwise specified (nos); chlorine; solvents nos; acids, bases, oxidizers nos, smoke nos; and diesel exhaust. The responsibility of repeated exposure to occupational irritants in the pathogenesis of new-onset asthma has been demonstrated or suggested by several epidemiological studies or case reports. These publications especially concern workers exposed to chlorine gas in pulp mills and paper mills, meat wrappers, workers exposed to formaldehyde, aluminum smelters exposed to pot fume emissions containing gaseous fluorides, hydrofluoric acid, and sulfur dioxide (potroom asthma), or workers exposed to machining fluids.
