Can Fish get off after being shot?
For those that have had the privilege of going spearfishing before, you would know that it is indeed possible for fish to get off the spear after you have shot them. In fact, even a shot right through the body seems to do very little to most fish (unless they are very small!) and as a result they will do anything to get away from you. Of course, the position that you shoot the fish will make all of the difference. Ideally, the spear should go through the head of the fish, but a lot of people just go for the body as you have less chance of missing. A perfect shot will either kill or paralyse the fish, meaning you can pull it in without it moving at all. This takes a lot of practice with your Spearfishing Gear [http://thespearfishingshop.com/spearfishing-gear/] though; you really have to know your gun and have a fair bit of experience. It can be done though; just have a look on You tube for some evidence!
However, most of the time the fish will struggle a bit after you have shot it. If the spear goes right through and the barb works properly you are likely to keep the fish, although even still sometimes they will rip the spear out. The best thing to do after you have shot a fish is to pull it towards you. How hard and how fast you pull should be determined by the side of the fish, and how well the spear is holding. I hate letting fish swim around with a spear hanging out of them because you are likely to bring sharks around, and they are also in pain!
When the fish is near you, grab it with two fingers in the gills and use a knife to kill it. If you do manage to shoot a large fish then its a good idea to allow it to run a bit, if you have a reel or Spearfishing Float. By trying to pull it in you are likely to damage something. Also, if you have the right Spearfishing Gear you will have a lot more success at doing this.
