How to Test Ohms of Wire

    • 1). Plug the black test lead into the “COM” socket on the multimeter. Plug the red test lead into the socket labeled with the Greek letter Omega.

    • 2). Turn on your multimeter and move the dial to the ohms section. This has a symbol that looks like the Greek letter Omega. The ohms section probably has multiple settings. Put it on the “200” setting to begin.

    • 3). Lay your wire out on a flat surface, not connected to anything. Connect one of the test leads, the red and black wires coming out of the multimeter, to an end of the wire. Connect the other lead to the opposite end.

    • 4). Turn the dial from “200” to the next ohm setting, “2K.” Continue turning the dial until the multimeter gives you a reading.

    • 5). Cross reference the ohm reading with numbers specific to your wire. Too many ohms indicates that the wire could be partially open or fully open, meaning that the wire might be broken.
