    • 1). Purchase paint for appliances in the color that you want. These are available at any home and garden store or in the paint section of a department store. Choose from brush on or spray paint.

    • 2). Take the refrigerator outside. If this is not possible, ventilate the space by opening the doors and windows.

    • 3). Protect handles and other parts of the refrigerator that you do not wish to paint. Cover with painter's tape or other protective covering, such as newspaper.

    • 4). Scrape off as much rust, if any, as possible. Clean the fridge with soapy water, or cleaning solution, and a sponge to remove any dirt and grease. Let the surface dry completely. Wipe the surface with rubbing alcohol to remove any oil from your hands as well as residue from the cleaning solution.

    • 5). Sand the surface to make it rough enough to accept new paint. Wipe the dust off and then apply a coat of primer. Apply a product to control the spread of rust, if applicable, and wait for it to dry completely.

    • 6). Apply the first coat of paint and wait for it to dry completely. Apply a second coat of paint, if necessary, and wait for it to dry.

    • 7). Remove the protective coverings and move the refrigerator back into the kitchen.
