Resources for Christian Domestic Violence Counselors
- Over the past few decades, Christian counseling has experienced enormous growth. When it comes to the issue of domestic violence, there are three main sources. First, get the pastor involved in the counseling process. She may have insight into the family and offer important solutions. Second, connect with professional counseling centers, such as CCEF (ccef.org), which host seminars and offer hands-on training. Finally, read broadly on the topic of domestic violence. There are many excellent books and journals out there, such as the Journal of Biblical Counseling.
- Involve the leadership of the church. Most likely they know the family and they may be frequently in contact. They may even have some solutions. Also most pastors have a good amount of training in this area from their seminary training and from later courses in counseling they may have taken. If pastors have been in ministry for a long time, they may also have a wealth of experience.
- Just because you are a Christian counselor, it does not mean that you cannot seek help outside the church. You might look into whether workplaces of those involved have some sort of anger management course or counseling services. At the least, a suggestion like this can create accountability. However, if the situation is life-threatening, seek help from other trained professionals, who specialize in this field. Contacting the civil authorities is also important.
- What makes a counselor a Christian is his belief in God. From this perspective, prayer is a resource that cannot be ignored. Pray for God to change hearts, bring repentance, cause reconciliation to take place, and make love triumph. Finally, join an association of counselors. A group of counselors not only provides much needed emotional support, but also invaluable resources of experience and social networks of help.
