How to Service Campagnolo Shifters

    Cable Adjustments

    • 1). Place the bicycle into the work stand.

    • 2). Turn the pedals with one hand while you move the Campy shifter through the gears. Listen for the "click" on each gear shift, a signature of the Campy line of shifters. Watch the cassette--the metal gear cluster-- on the rear wheel and make sure the shifter hits each gear.

    • 3). If you find slack on the gear changes, turn the barrel adjuster on the outer end of the shifter one quarter turn to the right to tighten the shifter. Pedal through the gears again and see if this fix took care of the shifting. Adjust by one-quarter increment turns to get the shifter hitting each gear. If this does not get the shifters working properly again, change and grease the cable.

    Changing and Greasing the Cable

    • 1). Unscrew the cable barrel adjuster all the way to the left on the shifters. Pull the cable out then find the small set screw to remove the cable.

    • 2). Go to the back of the derailleur the cable leads to. Unscrew the barrel adjuster on the derailleur side of the cable and remove it from the derailleur.

    • 3). Set the old cable and housing down and place the new cable and housing next to it. Cut the new cable to the same length as the old. Cut the housing in the same length, minus 2 inches on either end. Remove the old barrels adjusters from the old cable and set aside.

    • 4). Squirt bike grease onto the cable and into the cable housing, using the syringe and bike grease. Wipe away any excess then slide the cable into the cable housing. Attach the ferrules to both ends of the cable and housing. Slide the barrel adjusters over the end of the cable and housings so they rest above the ferrules.

    • 5). Thread the cable into the rear derailleur where the old cable was removed. Tighten the barrel adjuster down so it locks the cable into the derailleur. Thread the cable over the bicycle frame through the cable guides on the frame. Lead the cable up to the shifter. Thread the cable into the shifter and tighten the cable into the set screw with the small Phillip's screwdriver. Turn the barrel adjuster so it attaches to the shifter. Run through the gears and turn the barrel adjusters to the right until the gear-shifting is smooth and you've covered all gears.
