    • 1). Decide which part of the island you want to visit. While the island is accessible from both states, there is no road that runs the entire length of the island, so you are going to need to plan your vacation based on which part of the island you want to visit.

    • 2). Determine what kind of vacation this is going to be. Do you want to stay in a hotel or do you want to make it a camping trip? If you are looking to stay in a hotel, Chincoteague Island has hotels for those people looking to access the island from Virginia, while the town of Ocean City offers accommodations close to the Maryland side of the island. If you are looking to camp out, the Assateague State Park and the Maryland side of the National Seashore offer campsites for tents and RVs with varying amenities. Backcountry camping is also available. There is no camping on the Virginia side of the island but there are commercial camping facilities at nearby Chincoteague Island. Whatever your decision, make sure you call ahead of time to book your accommodation.

    • 3). Plan your activities. Hiking, hunting, fishing, kayaking, biking, crabbing, bird-watching, cruising and swimming are all options for your visit to the island.

    • 4). Pack your bags for your vacation. Don't forget to bring warm clothes because it can get cold at night. Bring a couple of pairs of shorts, hiking shoes and anything else that will be appropriate for the activities and the type of accommodation you plan for on Assateague Island.
