Following the release and critical failure of 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony has entered into an agreement with Marvel and Disney to incorporate Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Under the agreement, Sony will produce solo films featuring Spider-Man, starting with a 2017 reinvention of the character, and Marvel will be able to include the character in crossover films, such as Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2.

As the film is a reboot of the character, a new actor will be cast as Spider-Man, replacing Andrew Garfield (who portrayed the character in the last two installments in the franchise) as the titular character. A new actor has yet to be cast.

The acquisition of the Spider-Man franchise by Marvel will likely excite fans who wanted to see the character interact within the Marvel Universe. Unlike the DC Properties, which are all owned by Warner Bros studios, the rights to Marvel characters are split up between different studios. Fox Searchlight owns the rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four, Sony owns Spider-Man, and Disney/ Marvel studios own the rights to all other characters. However, this union between Disney and Sony will allow for interaction between the characters owned by the two companies, and allow all films to exist in the same universe. This will allow characters from the Marvel films to appear in standalone Spider-Man films, and Spider-Man will be featured in Marvel’s films.

The first Spider-Man standalone film is set for release on July 28th, 2017.

The film will be a part of Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which includes ten films released by Marvel and Disney between 2016 and 2019. Though the film is currently untitled, Marvel producer Kevin Feige has stated that the film will follow the story of a high-school aged Peter Parker who gains powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider. However, the film will not be an origin story of how Peter Parker became Spider-Man and will instead have Parker already established as the superhero at the beginning of the film. Additionally, it is said that several characters from previous Marvel films will be introduced in this film and help tie in the new Spider-Man universe into the Marvel world.

A major theme of the previous Spider-Man films has been responsibility and the feeling of isolation through differences. Though this is a theme that will be present in the new Spider-Man film, it will be different in the sense that Spider-Man exists in a larger universe. In the other films, Spider-Man faced responsibilities because he was the only superhero in existence, but the new films will introduce the character in a world with many other supernatural elements and costumed heroes. Another theme teens and tweens might be interested is the feeling of isolation when one is different, and what happens when someone’s uniqueness is questioned. Is Spider-Man really a unique individual when other superhuman beings exist within the same world?

Another interesting theme to talk to teens or tweens about is the different interpretations of a character. Similar to characters like Batman or Superman, there have been several different film versions of the Spider-Man character, including the Tobey Maguire trilogy, which included Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004), and Spider-Man 3 (2007), and the Andrew Garfield films, including The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). How do different actors and directors make the character different, and what similarities and differences exist between these interpretations? Relate it to mythological figures or iconic heroes like Sherlock Holmes or The Three Musketeers, whose stories are constantly reinvented and told in different ways.
