If you live in one of those states or provinces which do not allow game hunting with rifles, you have to appreciate the shotgun and all of its challenges. Yes, it is not great with range; yes it has strong recoil; but we have to play by the rules. If you love to hunt and own a shotgun, then you could look at a shotgun scope. It is a great way to ensure accurate shots with amazing regularity.

Why would one use a scope while hunting with a shotgun? Well it has a lot to do with how the shotgun is designed. The lineage - if you want to call it that - of the shotgun goes back to century old guns used by the first armies. The barrel of the gun is smooth on the inside as opposed to rifles with inner grooves. The rifle imparts a spin to the rounds which gives the shot a lot more velocity which allows it to travel a long distance.

The smooth barrel of the shotgun means that the shot does not have a lot of velocity and it cannot travel as long of a distance. Not only that, but the large shot size combined with the lower velocity creates a large recoil.

The design limitation of the shotgun puts you at a disadvantage. Since the slugs cannot travel long distances, you need to get closer to the game which reduces the chances of a successful hunt. This means that you must get the best shot whenever you get a chance. The shotgun scope will help you maximize the chances of good shot by allowing you to zero in without even firing a shot.

Some people may be tempted to use the regular rifle scopes on the shotguns. This is not advisable, though. The problem is that rifle scopes do not have a long relief like the shotgun. The rifles do not have nearly as much recoil, which means you can place your eye very close to the scope to take the aim. The strong recoil from the shotgun means you could easily give yourself a black eye using a scope made for a rifle.

Shotguns are great game hunting firearm and a lot of fun to shoot. However, their basic design does limit the range of the gun. Because you have to be so close to your target, you have to make the most of every shot so you never have to see that whitetail bouncing away from you because you missed him. The shotgun scope is a good way to overcome this limitation.
