The best free thing to do in San Diego is to visit one of its numerous and glorious beaches. If you have your dog with you head for the dog beach at Ocean Beach, or if you are looking to surf head for Windansea.
Balboa Park is a great place for a free day out. Stunningly beautiful, and absolutely huge, there are also activities galore. Children will love the Pepper Grove Play Area, and there are fantastic hiking trails to venture along.
Every month at the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art, a free show is laid on under the heading TNT, or Thursday Night Thing. The intriguing events are all art-related and all free, and could be anything from live bands to art exhibits.
The nights are hosted on the first Thursday of every month, except for January, when TNT take their winter holiday. Check the MCASD website for more info.
If you are a real bookworm, then head along to one of the numerous Public Libraries of San Diego. You will find free storytelling, book clubs or lectures happening almost weekly, and it is not just all about books. Free film screenings are a regular occurrence too.
Free art entertainment is to be had at Ray at Night. Taking place in Ray Street, the arts hub of the city, join in the free walk through the art studios and exhibits of Ray Street, while bands play on, and dancers dance.
Ray at Night takes place the first Saturday of every month from 6 to 9pm, and you will find it located just off University Avenue.
