Make Your Glasses Work for You

With some 11 million people in England alone getting an eye test in 2010 according to the NHS, it is clear that many in the UK are worried about their vision and how to protect it moving forward.  For those in the workforce who require the use of some kind of corrective lens it is important to optimise glasses specifically to help you work more comfortably and efficiently. While getting an eye test and identifying the proper prescription is a great start for corporate eye care, be sure to take advantage of some of the technologies available to make your glasses work to their full potential for you. Lenses have come a long way from the early days of prescriptions, with numerous advancements available to make everything from driving at night to walking into the sunlight a more enjoyable experience.  Two lens options in particular are worth taking a look at for those who need glasses for the workplace: Ultraclear and UV protection.

UV Protection

Opting for UV protection on your lenses can be a great help for your eyesight overtime.  The most common source of ultra violet rays is the sun and although the Earth's atmosphere blocks somewhere around 97% of harmful UV rays, many should still be worried about the remaining 3%.  UV rays are also emitted from florescent light bulbs, which are often found in an office environment and can prove to be harmful. Exposure to UV rays can cause cataracts, pterygium and pinguecula in the eyes, so protecting them from excessive UV exposure should be a high priority.  A UV filter on your lenses will help to prevent the rays from your eyes and having a negative effect on your vision.  They are a must for employees who spend an excessive amount of time outdoors and should be looked at by those who work in an office environment.  A UV filter can be applied to both clear and tinted lenses making them an option for work both indoor and outdoor employees.  Think of it as a long term insurance plan to reduce the harm caused to your eyes and the further eroding of your vision.

Ultraclear

Opting to get the ultraclear lens may be the best thing you can do if you work with VDUs or if driving is a big part of your job.  Ultraclear is an anti-reflection coating that reduces glare on your lenses.  It is particularly good for VDU work as it can reduce the "noise" you can experience from computers around you, preventing light emitted from other screens from bouncing off the inside of your lens and shining in your eye.  They are great for driving, especially at night, as they reduce light scatter from headlights and street lights, giving you clearer vision with less distractions.  Often an anti-reflection coating is coupled with an anti-scratch coating that will help prevent wear and tear on your glasses, which is a great added bonus. Getting an anti-glare coating on your lens is truly the best thing you could opt for when buying specifically for work.

There are plenty of other options that you can add to your lenses when buying a new pair of glasses, however, these are probably the two with the highest immediate rewards.  There will be markets where other additions will probably be more beneficial, but on the whole, UV protection and anti-glare coatings will work wonders in helping you become better protected and more focused at work, so be sure to ask for them when you see your local optician an eye test.
