Acne is the result of pores that are clogged by dirt, dead skin, and oil. This could lead to outbreaks of blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples if not treated properly. The root cause to most acne come from under the skin, so simply washing away oils on the surface of your skin does not do much to prevent acne. Consistency is the key but washing your face too much can irritate your skin and create more dead skin, which helps clog your pores.

Salicylic acid is essential when it comes to unclogging pores, which is one of the main causes of acne. Salicylic acid loosens the oils and dead skin that are clogging the pores. Most face wipes and astringents are based off fo sylicylic acid, most of them containing 2%. When using sylicylic acid, it is important to keep in mind that it makes the treated skin more sensitive to UV light so be sure to use an oil free sunblock when you are in direct sunlight. Skin products containing sulfur and sodium sulfacetamide could be highly effective with little side effects. These active ingredients are similar to salicylic acid because of their effects of unclogging your pores.

Benzoyl peroxide is a bactericide that is extremely effective when it comes to quick acne treatment. I found it very effective myself, especially when used twice a day. Benzoyl peroxide can come as a bar or a gel. Most containing either 5% or 10%, the 10% version is used in full face wash products whereas the 5% is used in spot-treatment products. I use both versions and find both to be very effective. The only drawback with benzoyl peroxide is that it drys up the skin a great deal, so it is very important to use an oil-free moisturizer on your face to avoid dryness. If you experience irritation while using benzoyl peroxide, use a product with a lower concentration of it.

Exfoliating creams are used to wash away dead skin and treat damaged skin. It can also help open your pores which will make cleansing your face a lot more effective. This cream should be applied every night as part of your evening ritual. Exfoliating creams will usually have a grainy, sandy texture to it but will feel very gentle on your face almost like a massage. Like always, consistency is key.
Initially, using these medications may cause your skin to break out worse than before because all FDA approved acne medications are causing your skin to repair and regenerate faster. This means that the slowly developing pimples under your skin will be forced to the surface of your skin faster.
