How to Clean the Window Air Conditioning Unit
- 1). Take the window unit outside. Make sure it's within reach of a hose and not in a muddy area.
- 2). Remove the grille to access the unit's metal fins. It may pop off on its own, or it could have screws. Take out the filter, and set it aside.
- 3). Spray the fins, fan and grille with HVAC or all-purpose cleaner, and let it sit for five minutes. Scrub between the metal fins and grille using a brush. If the filter is washable, spray it with cleaner and rinse. Wipe the fan blades and plastic components with a damp cloth.
- 4). Rinse the air conditioner and its components thoroughly with the hose. Make sure to get all traces of cleaner from between the fins and the grille.
- 5). Dry the unit as much as possible with a towel. Leave it out in the sun to finish drying.
- 6). Bend the metal fins back in place if necessary. Replace the filter and grille when the unit is completely dry. Bring it back inside, and install as usual.
