Definition: Many grey horses start out their lives an almost solid color with only a few white hairs. One example of this is the famous Lipizzaners who are solid black when born and by the time they have reached the age of 10 or so, are white. A 'rose grey' is horse who has chestnut hairs interspersed with the white hairs. The length of time a horse takes to turn from dark to white can vary. Some will be almost entirely white by the time they are six or seven years old, while other may take several years longer to turn white.

It's not unusual for a horse to remain 'fleabitten', with small flecks of the horse's original color interspersed with the horse's white coat hairs. The mane and tail can also take longer to turn white than the body hair. A dapple gray has a coat with grey rings over it's body. Sadly, no grey horse ever stays completely gray.
