The FBI compiles violent crime data within the Crime in the United States report and categorizes it as either murder, forcible rape, robbery or aggravated assault. The FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program groups murder and nonnegligent manslaughter together. It defines it as the willful (nonnegligent) killing of one human being by another. Also included in the data is supplementary homicide information regarding the age, sex, and race of the murder victim and the offender; the type of weapon used; the relationship of the victim to the offender; and the circumstance surrounding the incident. It defines forcible rape as the carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will. Attempted rape, assault or threat with the intent to commit rape are also included, though statutory rape is not. Attacks on men are tallied as aggravated assaults or sex offenses, depending on the circumstances and the extent of any injuries. Robbery is defined as the taking or the attempt to take anything of value, while aggravated assault is an unlawful attack in order to inflict severe or aggravated bodily injury. - The act of burglary is elevated to robbery if force or the use of force is used.Hemera Technologies/AbleStock.com/Getty Images

Larceny-theft is the unlawful taking of property, such as the theft of a bicycle or item from a department store. Motor-vehicle theft is the unlawful taking of a self-propelled vehicle, while arson is the as the willful or malicious burning or attempt to burn a structure, whether or not with intention to defraud. - Separate from the Crime Report compiling is an annual report released by the FBI which chronicles the occurrence of hate crimes. Hate Crime Statistics reports crimes instigated by the victim's race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation or disability. The report includes duplicate material from the violent crimes section of the Uniform Crime Report. For example, an incident of murder motivated by race or religion would be reported both in the Crimes in the United States report and in the Hate Crime Statistics report.
