How to Get a Certificate of Competency to Inspect Elevators
- 1). Go to the NAESA website to download the application materials. Once on the website, select the "Certification" tab from the menu and continue to the "QEI Training Course and Exam" tab.
- 2). Prepare copies of the following documents and items, which you will need to submit with your application: driver's license, additional licenses, education diplomas and a photograph.
- 3). Attend the QEI training course at the location of your choosing. You can access the training course locations on the NAESA website under the "Training Calendar" tab. While it is not required to take the training course (you can just take the exam), it is highly recommended by the NAESA.
- 4). Wait for your application to be approved by the NAESA. You cannot sit for the QEI exam before you have written notification that your application is approved. If you are not approved to sit for the exam, it is most likely because you do not have the education and experience required by the NAESA (and specified on the application). You can, however, resubmit an application once you've achieved the required experience and education.
- 5). Look at the "Training Calendar" on the NAESA website to find out where the exam is located and the date and time it takes place.
- 6). Bring your own code book to the exam. The list of approved code books should be listed on your acceptance letter to sit for the exam.
- 7). Take the QEI exam (160 multiple choice questions). You have up to eight hours to finish your exam, and in order to pass the game, you must score 70 percent or higher. If you pass the exam and have a photograph on file, you will be given a certification card no less than eight months after the successful completion of the exam. If you fail the exam, you may resubmit all application materials and take a new exam at the time of your choosing, following an additional acceptance to sit for the exam again.
