12 tips to follow immediately with your new SLR
1 - Photographing
As strange as it may seem, there is a tendency to ask a lot of questions when you discover its hardware, but we forget to use. So needless to browse specialized sites (too late if you ever read this!): Pass the main switch to "ON" and shoot. Get to know your camera, turn around your subject, do not try to change any settings, the automatic mode will be enough to satisfy you for the first test.
Once you've taken a few pictures, observe the result. And go there!
2 - Read the manual
It is anything but glamorous but most questions on specialized sites and forums are answered picture in the user manual. We therefore advise you to take a little time in the evening to evening, to discover the different functions of your camera.
Read the usually supplied with all SLR and complete documentation quick learning guide. And come back if you have a question for which you do not find an answer. It must necessarily be somewhere.
3 - Do not change the settings
A digital SLR is a very powerful and very complex camera: plump menus, diverse and varied functions, many operating modes. Forget it at first, simply auto mode and learn to temper your enthusiasm.

Once the raw emotion last photos, and after reading the manual, start to change a setting and one and observe the result. If it is better in your eyes, made of other pictures. Confirm your choice. 4 - Photograph JPG
The RAW format is widely acclaimed by fans of digital, and we are the first to praise the merits (see our guide on RAW ). But when you begin, you must already control its case before the master image processing. If you have no experience in this area, choose JPG. This format also has the advantage of highlighting the shortcomings of shooting since it takes into account the settings box to produce the final image, unlike RAW allows to reinterpret the treatment.
5 - Do not buy any accessories
There are very few accessories that deserve to complement your equipment from the early days. At most, you can purchase an additional battery, one or more memories and a good camera bag cards. Everything else is useless as you do not speak any less hardware.
6 - Watch your photos on the big screen
We can never say enough but the back of your DSLR LCD does not judge the quality of a photo. The colors are often rough, difficult to assess sharpness, exposure too. Transfer images to your computer, view them in full screen and take the time to observe before deleting.
7 - Do not listen to your loved
When you start using a DSLR, it is common for family, friends, who are more novice you in the matter, find your nice photos. You quickly become " the family photographer ". Do not listen, it's not true! Your first images will be full of defects and this is normal.
By cons, you must listen to what is said about your compositions, captured expressions, emotion you get (or not) to relay through your photos. These are the only really useful information that will help you progress.
8 - Use a single objective
You have received your SLR kit with optical? Okay, this lens is used there and not looking to acquire a new one immediately. When you have toured the possibilities offered by this perspective, when you experience a need that you can not cover then you can start considering a new purchase.
9 - Do not use flash
The flash is useful (sometimes) but complex to manage. Although engineers have worked miracles in recent years to allow us to use the flash without much effort, do not think you'll be able to control and the housing and optics and flash in the same week. We do not forbid you to try either but be patient, read point number 1.
10 - Learn the basics of photo
To take full advantage of your digital SLR, better acquire some essential knowledge. 11 - You're not GéoTrouvetou
We see every year new SLR users arrive and wonder about the lack of quality of their portraits, macro, bokeh, extruded, high-speed synchro, flash photography, etc.. Do not try to win a contest of photo technique the first weeks. Start by pleasant images without any concern, get to know your camera, and then you can approach a particular trick photography technique.
12 - Ask questions but not too fast
Facing your successes or your failures, you ask. What I did, râté succeeded. What setting do I hit to make it better, worse. Take notes, re-read them. Once you have enough information to understand where you are, the first real questions are coming. If you do not find the answer in the user manual or on a photo forum (do not look, ours is fine !), just ask your questions.
