Keeping a Healthy Aquarium

The most vital element to the health and longevity of fish is keeping a clean aquarium.
Cleaning an aquarium becomes a bigger project, the bigger the tank.
It is recommended that you clean your aquarium about once a week; however, this may not be practical for very large tanks.
The task of cleaning your aquarium should begin with making sure that you have an adequate place to transfer your fish during the cleaning.
The water you place them in, no matter what sort of container you use, should be maintained at the same temperature and purity as the water in their tank.
Be sure to be gentle when transferring your fish from their aquarium to a bowl or whatever transfer container you have chosen, fish often die from shock during the transfer.
Be careful to go slow and transfer your fish, kindly, and one at a time.
The best way to capture them for transfer is with a net.
Simply grabbing your fish with your hands will make them highly susceptible to shock and injury.
The next most important part of cleaning your fish tank is choosing the cleansing agent.
Many pet stores sell special cleansers and cleansing agents for tanks.
While no harm will come from using these products, all that is really necessary is a mild cleanser and a soft sponge.
You want to remove your fish and then drain the dirty water from the tank.
Remove everything inside and clean all of the tank equipment and accessories.
If you use gravel or sand, it is recommended to replace it at this point.
The tank and everything in it must be thoroughly cleaned and extremely well rinsed.
You do not want to leave behind any trace of cleanser; as such residue may prove unhealthy to your fish.
When replacing the water in the tank it is very important to make sure that you use a neutralizer if you are refilling with tap water.
The neutralizer will purify the water and make it safe for your fish.
Also be sure to make sure that the right temperature level is maintained before returning your fish to their aquarium.
It is quite proper to take all steps and check all levels as if you were preparing a new tank.
Maintaining a clean, healthy environment for your fish will guarantee that they will bring you many years of enjoyment and satisfaction.
