Pre-teen boarding schools offer young people a chance to immerse themselves in their educational experience without the distractions available at home, such as television. Most boarding schools are college preparatory private schools with excellent academic standards. Some pre-teen boarding schools offer troubled children the individual attention they need to develop self-esteem and academic skills. Many schools also have high schools that pre-teens can move into upon completion of their middle school work. - The Delphian School is a day and boarding school in Oregon, with a teaching philosophy based on the writings of L. Ron Hubbard. The school emphasizes close-knit community involvement and academic excellence. The pre-teen, or middle school, curriculum focuses on developing basic skills from earlier years into complex learning and on integrating academic learning into real-life applications. Students in the middle school section at the Delphian School usually enter at 11 years of age. The school offers elementary and high school courses, as well. There is a summer program that teaches students how to study, and offers one-on-one tutoring. During the school year, participation in sports and art is a requirement, so students can have as many different educational experiences as possible. On the weekends, students take shopping trips to Portland, go mountain climbing, play sports and attend art festivals.

The middle school is a separate campus that separates boys and girls. The school also has an elementary school and a co-ed high school campus. The middle school operates under the educational theory that males and females in the pre-teen years learn differently, which is why they are taught separately. Admission into the middle school requires extensive testing and an interview with select members of the faculty. The school has a generous financial aid program that subsidizes a third of the student body. Cranbrook focuses on multiculturalism and global learning, so they accept international students. It is one of the top private schools in Michigan.

The school focuses on young girls who have trouble with grades, show disrespect for adults and have trouble following the rules. Common diagnoses of New Leaf students before admission include bipolar disorder, ADHD and oppositional defiant disorder. The school believes that taking a troubled pre-teen out of her existing environment and providing individualized attention will increase self-esteem and self control. Along with academics, students learn listening skills, healthy relational boundaries and how to express themselves constructively. Each student has a personal academic plan, and classes are based on skill level as opposed to grade level. Extracurricular activities include horseback riding, choir, fund-raising for kids in need, soccer and 4-H club.
