Why do most people use poverty and poor synonymously? These two words have very different meanings and will require some social engineering in order to get people to use these words in the right context.
Most Americans haven't experienced being poor so it is quite natural to confuse poor with poverty.
We are inundated with media about what is considered poor from some tribal nations in Africa to the slums of India.
We see families and children nearly emaciated with huge swollen bellies.
We see the lack of water, housing, food, and other resources that render people completely incapacitated to move beyond their present condition.
The hopelessness is seen through the souls of the people's eyes who are baring the circumstance.
The descriptive images present a good picture of poor.
However, the important matter is that poor is a sense and acceptance of hopelessness.
Poverty is comparable to poor, but poverty is nothing like it.
If you are in the juxtaposition of poverty, whether you are in it or on the cuffs, resources are so tight that you need to gauge the importance of meeting basic essential needs with other financial obligations.
You are just broke! However, the difference is that you may have the ingenuity to navigate through the complex social assistance systems, find opportunities, or pay more to have your needs met.
If presented with opportunities, such as a better education, higher paying job, access to resources that meets your basic essential needs, you may be able to progress out of poverty without succumbing to hopelessness.
What distinguishes poor from poverty is the outcome.
Poor and poverty, although similar in description, convey different meanings and outcomes.
Poor refers to a depressing mental impairment due to socio-economic conditions.
It is a symptom of poverty.
Poor suggests a faulty sense of inferiority due to a lack of resources and inability to obtain those resources.
The lack thereof encumbers a person or situation to a spirit of hopelessness.
On the other hand, poverty simply means you are broke.
Money and resources are scarce, but there is a chance to improve the situation by obtaining the right resources and opportunity to transition out.
Although poor and poverty can lead to each other, we can't equate two.
