    • 1). Have an eye exam every year, even if you do not notice any problems with your vision. Inform the eye doctor you have diabetes and ask him to specifically check for cataracts and any other eye problems your condition predisposes you to.

    • 2). Take all medications to manage blood sugar exactly as directed.

    • 3). Work with a dietician experienced with diabetes to devise an eating plan that helps you control carbohydrate intake and includes a variety of healthy foods.

    • 4). Exercise at least 30 minutes a day most days of the week to lower blood sugar. Talk to your doctor before starting an exercise program, as he can recommend appropriate activities.

    • 5). Check your blood sugar regularly to make sure you are within your target range. Your doctor will inform you of your target range and how often you need to check it. It might range from several times a day to once a week. Record these numbers in a notebook.

    • 6). Watch your intake of alcohol, as it can raise your blood sugar. If you choose to drink, do so in moderation and always with food.

    • 7). Drink several cups of green or black tea daily. According to a study published in the May 2005 issue of the American Chemical Society's Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, diabetic rats given either type of tea for three months had significantly less cataract formation than the control group. The amount given was the equivalent of slightly less than five cups.
