Tips For Preventing Falls In Your Home

103 55
If you currently take care of a loved one you know how dangerous a fall can be.
Falls can lead to serious injuries and some falls can lead to death for an elderly individual.
Fortunately there are important actions you can start taking today to help improve safety in your home.
You can begin by removing things that may cause falls in your home.
Electrical wires can pose a real hazard especially if they are hard to see during the night.
Many of the falls that happen each year can be attributed to electrical cords.
Try to limit cord usage in your home.
Avoid laying cords across hallways or frequently used pathways in your home.
Tape can be used to cover wires that can't be removed.
Just be sure that the tape you use properly covers the cords.
My second tip has to do with the lighting in your home.
A well-lit home will be a safer home for those that have trouble seeing.
As we get older our eyes may become less and less clear.
With proper lighting it will be easier to see obstacles and obstructions in our path.
Dim lighting is a recipe for disaster when it comes to fall safety in your home.
If your house has dim or poor lighting consider adding more lights or brighter bulbs.
My third tip has to do with safety devices.
If you are already concerned with fall safety then you may have thought of purchasing a fall prevention device.
The problem is that it can be hard to know what to buy.
From bed rails to grab bars and everything in between, there are literally tons of safety devices on the market.
All safety devices have a specific purpose.
Bed rails are perfect for bedside assistance, while grab bars are more ideal for use in the tub area.
Both bed rails and grab bars can work well with each other.
Bedside safety is just as important as bathroom safety and vice versa.
Just put it this way, you can never really be too safe.
Investing in one of these devices can be the difference between falling or not.
I will now be covering the use of specialty footwear.
Slippers can be a great compliment to any safety regime.
You will of course want to buy slippers that are specially made with anti-slipping in mind.
This footwear can be found online or at shoe stores that carry specialty footwear.
Have your eyesight checked to ensure your eyes are not a safety concern.
As I went over earlier your eyesight will deteriorate as you get older.
If you wear glasses you should make sure they are the right prescription for your eyes.
Your prescription will need to be updated as time goes by.
If you have blurry vision at all this can be a serious concern and should be addressed right away.
Following some of these tips should help improve safety in your home.
The important thing is to begin making changes and improvements now rather than wait until it is too late.
