Are You Spending Too Much Time in the Woods?

It just never seems to get better-slicing the ball. You get up to the first hole, put your ball on the tee and get the club back and swing as hard as you can and there goes a wicked slice off into the woods. While your buddies are off walking down the fairway you're somewhere in the woods looking for your ball. You tell yourself that this is not going to happen again. But two holes later you're playing in the woods again. So what went wrong and how are you going to correct a slice?

Well Here Is a Quick Review.

To put things in perspective, if you rarely slice the ball then you really have no big worries about how to correct a slice because it happens to most golfers. But if you're the golfer who thinks that all golf courses veer to the right all the time you need to listen to this advice. A slice occurs when the ball is struck in a manner that causes the ball to spin horizontally. When you have the face of your golf club in the open position and strike the ball you end up with a slice. So the very first step is to make sure that face of the club is not open but is square as it hits the ball. So How Does The Golf Club Get in the Square Position? You Might Be Holding Me Too Tight!

Gripping your golf club can be causing the problem. Holding it too easily or holding it too tightly can be a problem. You have to hold it just right, in this case that would be a firm grip. A club is like a handshake in that you don't want to break it but you don't want to be wimpy. By having a firm grip it allows the club head to position itself to a square face on impact. Your hands have an easy job when playing golf. All they do is hold on to the club. You don't want your hands roaming all over the place because you never know where they'll end up.

Take it Easy With That Grip. If the position for your hands on the club is wrong then this could be your problem for slicing. Look at your grip on the club to determine how many knuckles are looking back at you. If you are a right handed golfer, you should be seeing 2 knuckles on your left hand. You are looking at your right hand if you are left handed. If you do not, then you need to rotate the hand (not the club) until you can see these knuckles. Your left thumb (right for lefties) should be staring down the very top of the golf shaft. When you are standing in a normal stance you should be seeing a V between your index finger and thumb on the right hand. The opposite hand applies for lefties. The V should be looking at your right shoulder. If it is not then you have to adjust your position. Simply making these minor alterations for the golf grip have often eliminated the golfer's slice.

Follow Your Mental Checklist So the next time you golf and go to address the ball, check the position of your hands on the club and remember to relax your grip. Don't pull your head up off the ball, use your hips in the swing and let the club do the heavy work and not your arms. Now that you know how to correct a slice the only problem is that you won't get to spend so much time in the woods with your friends.
