Compare Infrared Portable Heaters

    • 1). Select an infrared heater with sheathing such as aluminum, copper, brass, stainless steel or iron over the heating element. Heating elements are often quartz, heat-conducting metal or ceramic. All of these offer warmth in a short time, but quartz elements provide the quickest heat.

    • 2). Choose a heater large enough for the job. Although you're not trying to heat a room with your portable heater, you want it to heat a large enough area to warm the people using it. For example, if you are using it in your family room, find a heater that warms a large zone around the entire seating area.

    • 3). Pick a model that stays cool to the touch while in operation. This safety feature is especially important if there are children or pets in the home. All models should have an automatic shut-off switch that turns the unit off when someone tips it over or moves it.

    • 4). Look for special features, such as a programmable thermostat. If the unit has one, you can set the heater to operate when you are normally in the room and automatically shut off when you leave. Remote controls are another special feature offered on some brands of heaters.
