You really don't have to look to far today to see the emerging new trends in restaurant decorating.
It's the new food and dining related TV shows that are bringing it all into people living rooms.
Amazing design work that it turns out, even features Mata Ortiz pottery.
The latest trend in Mexican ceramics.
Mata Ortiz Pottery for Classical International Restaurant Decorating The one odd thing that I noticed about the show that featured it, was that it wasn't even a Mexican restaurant that it was showcased it in.
It was in fact a classic continental dining establishment that was going together in Lake Tahoe Nevada.
It really didn't matter though.
A Mexican Pottery Style that Actually Predates Mexico The reason for that, was that this avant garde style of ceramics with roots that go back over a thousand years, looks nothing like what might be described as what is commonly accepted as classic Mexican pottery.
You see its origins actually predate Mexico and Mexican culture.
Broken Shards from Ancient Ruins Inspire an Art Movement In fact this pottery in its original design form, comes from an ancient civilization called Casas Grandes that's now in ruins.
It was the shards of broken pots that could be found scattered about on the ground that inspired a complete breakaway art movement back in the late 1970s.
Each Piece is Hand Crafted Using No Modern Tools Unlike so many other methods and styles of ceramics and porcelain that have received popular acclaim and converted to modern production methods, this pottery is still crafted using the original techniques of the first ancient peoples.
No modern tools, of course means no potters wheel and not even a modern kiln.
An Entire Family Working Together to Craft a Single Pot In fact each piece of Mata Ortiz that you might see being used in restaurant decorating, can take up to several days for an artist to take through completion.
Often times even whole families are involved in the crafting of a single pot.
The father might sculpt, while his wife does the painting, as the children gather wood and prepare the firing pit.
